Our extra-curricular highlights
Public Speaking
The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition was introduced in 1995. It aims to heighten the awareness of multicultural issues among NSW primary school students while developing their interest in public speaking and improving their confidence and speech-writing skills.
Each year all Collaroy Plateau Public School students in Years 3-6, present a prepared speech for the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. After listening to all the speeches, in class two or three representatives from each class will be selected finalists to compete at the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking finals, held in Term 2.
For 26 years this competition has been encouraging primary school students to explore ideas of multiculturalism in Australia, as well as giving them a place to practise their public speaking skills and improve their confidence. Every year close to 2,000 students are chosen to represent their schools in the finals.
Debating
Students can develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events. CPPS is proud to have two debating teams – the Express and Classic teams, who practice weekly at lunchtimes.
At Debating Club students will have the opportunity to learn skills and practise a range of strategies to assist them in their debates with other schools. There is also an annual training day camp organised by the Arts Unit for students to receive advice from the experts in the field of debating.
Creative and Performing Arts Band
At Collaroy Plateau Pubic School we strongly believe that learning a musical instrument offers significant cognitive benefits, including enhanced memory, improved attention, and strengthened thinking skills, as well as prompting mental health.
Collaroy Plateau Public School has a very successful Band program. Currently there are four bands. Children in Year 3 have the opportunity to join the Training Band and graduate to the Concert, Performance Band and Jazz Band. Year 2 children have the opportunity to join the New Recruits in Term 4 as an introduction to the band program.
Practices and tutorials are held each week, one before and/or one after school and one/or at lunchtime. The bands perform at school events, festivals and competitions throughout the year.
Special events include Band Workshops and Showcase Night. The Band Conductor is actively supported by the teaching staff and the P&C Band Committee.

The programme aims to not only produce beautiful ballroom dancers, but also more resilient, confident and empathetic students.
